Is there any way of removing the social network column ( not the reading pane which I have already removed ) from Outlook email? I do not and will not be using this facility and it takes up too much screen space. I cannot now read my emails without scrolling side to side!!!!

Not sure what you mean by the social network column. If you mean the messaging column, just click the kind-of-smiley-rectangle button at top right to toggle it on and off.

Clicked on the rectangle and got the word " messaging " and a X. Clicked the X but the column remains. This is the outlook which has replaced Hotmail rather than outlook express. Does this make a difference? I have also tried all the other symbols on the screen but have found nothing that removes it.
This is what my outlook page looks like:

Where exactly is the social network column?

My screen looks the same as yours from the thick blue ( starting Outlook )band down. Down the right hand side is a column which contains various and changing messages, such as 1.Protect your inbox... 2. Connect Twitter to yr outlook ac.... 3. Outlook anywhere on windows, phone, iphone android... 4. outlook.com feels instant with the latest IE.... 5. ....use Skydrive..., and there is one relating to Facebook and another that refers to Linked in.................... I have tried ( I think ) every button there is on the blue line and the col is still there.
It makes the space available for the email so small.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have switched the advertising preferences to OFF but they all automatically switch themselves back to ON. I thought that might have produced the rt-hand column?
Those are the ads that you get if you don't have an ad blocker (see the red octagon at the right-hand side of my address bar - that's adblock plus).

On looking further at your outlook screen, you also have a column down the right hand side of the screen but there is nothing printed in it. That is a lot of space not available for looking at email. My whole screen is only a foot wide. I will look at adblocker, thanks for that, but I would like to use all of my screen.
