What version of windows are you using and what anti-virus programme are you using/
If you are running Microsoft Security Essentials then that turns off Windows Defender (because MSE includes Defender).

Ah you may have have hit the nail on the head VHG, I'm running IE8 (I think) on HP Vista and I'm running Microsoft Security Essentials, and Windows Firewall is on. I've deleted Malwarebytes thinking that was the problem. But Defender is still turned off. What started my query was that since yesterday there has been something running in the background all the time causing IE to stop working when I tried to use it. It drove me mad I was trying to find a bug that maybe the cause. Do you think that is enough protection with MSE and the firewall?
As VHG suggests Windows Defender is incorporated into MSE.

MSE plus Firewall is fine for most people, thats all I use. Malwarebytes is handy to have as well, but you need only to use it about every 2 weeks, or if you think you have a problem. If you do re-install Malwarebytes make sure you download the free version.

Thanks everyone, I will re-install the free version of Malwarebytes, I used it every so often. I ran a scan and it detected no virus ect. but when Internet Explorer not responding almost all day it made me wonder if it was a virus. Still don't know how to solve it.
Try opening "Internet Properties", go to the Advanced options and reset the browser. You'll get two options as to what gets reset, try the one without the box checked firs,t to keep your personal settings.
Nothing to lose, may work.

That resets IE by the way
