With DVDs it depends on what you want to play the finished disc. If it's another computer it's much simpler than if you want to play it on a DVD player as then it has to be saved and burned in a format that the DVD player can read.

I usually copy CDs to play on the CD player but they don't play. What format should I use? Or do you think I might be going about it the wrong way?

Okay- most older CD players can't read .wav or .mp3, some new ones can read .mp3 no problem others can't, they will usually have a list if file formats they can read printed on them. Some very old CD players can't read CD-R or CD-RW at all whatever file format is on them so you have a lot of variables to start with. CD-R is much better to use generally for your burning projects.What's your make and model of CD player, it might help to know?
If you just burn them as a data CD then it literally just copies the files and it won't be able to be played on a CD player. Make sure you burn them as an audio file. If you are using Nero this is pretty easy as it has an option for this, not sure about others because I usually only use that. What programme are you trying to burn them with?

I use Windows media player, and one player is JVC, and the others are portable radio/CD players. The JVC is a couple years old and the portables are fairly new.

I've never used WMP to burn a music disc but it does apparently have the facility to make a replayable audio cd, which then leaves you with the problem that if this is what you are selecting and you are burning to a CD-R ( not a CD- RW) it's probably that your players are not compatible.
