As Epona has stated, using 'Save as', rather than 'Save' allows you to select 'Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP' as the file type. However you can change the OpenOffice settings to make that file type the default, slo that simply clicking 'Save' will use your chosen format. See here for instructions:...

Can you not elect ' save as' instead of 'save' and save it as a word doc?
duzy - you have to buy microsoft word - know what you are talking about as I have open office - but since I no longer type professionally ie work - I don't need microsoft word. you do have to buy it but it is much superior than open office I agree.
hi Sharingan - hope you enjoyed your hols - you were missed here with your wee answers. would you have any cure for insomnia as I am zonked here with n sleep for 3 nights now. sorry duzy for going off on a tangent.
no sleep
duzy don't cry - there is more to life than open office hahah - wish I could genuinely laugh through this tiredness.
Hi Connemmara, sorry can't help with the insomnia, my Dad suffers with it terribly too, but nothing much seems to work for him.xx
shar how does your dad cope the following day - I am ready for the hills
>>>you have to buy microsoft word

She has already said she has Word Starter 2010 on it which was a free cut down version of Word shipped with some Windows 7 laptops.

It also included Excel Starter as well, a cut down version of Excel.
oh well vhg - yous are all the techies - was only throwing my thruppence worth - I am still on the old windows xp with no microsoft word. sorry!!!!
When you go to save the document choose the 'Save As' rather than Save optin. it should then show you all the option you have, choose 'Save as Word document' and it should save as this. You should be able to go into the settings and make save as Word your Default. this link may help http://coe.unm.edu/uploads/docs/coe-main/tutorials/file-migration.pdf
Why not uninstall Open Office? You can always download it (for free) if you ever find you need it.
What's the file extension your saving. If it's .odt then its Open Office default setting. If it's .doc Then it's MS Word.
As Sharingan suggests do a 'save as' and specify a .doc file extension.

If it continues to open in Open Office with a file extension in .doc format, then you may need to change your file associations.
I doubt very much that it saves it in Open Office format. Much more likely is that you've got Open Office set as the defualt for opening Word documents, so once you've saved it, if you double-click it will open if OE instead of Word.
All you need to do is right-click a document that you've saved, choose "Open with" then "Choose default program" and select Word. After that, Word docs will always open in Word.

But if you hate Open Office with a passion, why don't you just uninstall it?
As Epona has stated, using 'Save as', rather than 'Save' allows you to select 'Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP' as the file type.

If you really don't like OpenOffice, try LibreOffice instead. (It's derived from the source code for Lotus, which was the main commercial rival to Microsoft Office until it was placed into the public domain):

Buenchico, interesting about Lotus, I've some really old study files done in Lotus Word-Pro -would libreoffice open them? (sorry to hijack thread)
Epona:
I've not got a clue (and I can't find a full list of all the file format's that LibreOffice's word processor supports). Since it's free, why not try it anyway?

Oh Kevink, thanks so much.
That is the answer, as I only have this Word Starter 2010 thing I can right click and open as "Microsoft Client Virtualisation Handler' and that opens it as a word document.
I don't want to uninstall OO as I do use it for a few things but I can't get to grips with it like the old Word package however for the little I use it I can't justify buying it and this little starter does well if I can reopen it in the same format.
I'm drying my tears and having a Southern Comfort and Coke to celebrate!!
Thanks again x
