Good morning, during the week I decided not to renew my Norton subscription and instead I've installed MSE + Malwearbytes on my PC and Laptop. The laptop (W8, IE10) seems fine but I keep getting an odd sound from the PC (W7, IE10) to inform me that Windows Defender is not working, I think, after a bit of checking, that this is normal, but just wanted to check with the knowledgeable AB techies, that I'm still protected?
I've used Norton for a while now, so I'm a little nervous of having changed to something unfamiliar.
Thanks for looking.

Hi Frank, I have a W8 Desktop and a W7 Laptop. MSE + Malwarebytes work well on the W8 machine, on the W7 machine I use Avast! (free for 12 months) as an AV.
I gave up on Norton A few years ago when it became sluggish and unreliable.

Morning WyeDyed, thanks for the reply, I'll look into Avast if I find I'm unhappy with MSE on the PC.
Your correct in saying Windows Defender is switched off, because you have another AV program running (ie, MSE), but you should not keep on getting prompts about this.

Is it User Account Control giving you the prompts?

There's unlikely to be anything wrong with MSE on your PC. More likely to be IE 10 which doesn't seem to work well with W7.

Personally, I would revert to IE 9.

Al.

I don't think so, it was "Device failed to connect" sound that I was getting, so perhaps I'm wrong about the sound relating to Defender being off.

Perhaps that's it Alston, I'll have a look when I get home. As long as I'm protected it doesn't really matter, I just wanted to make sure.
Did you completely remove Norton before you installed MSE if you didn't then download the Norton Uninstaller from the Symantec website and run it make sure you choose the correct version . MSE disables Windows Defender as it doesn't need it because it does the same thing You will be secure after you carryout the uninstall of Norton if you have to do it.

Thanks Galeck, yes I did use Norton uninstall first.
All seems to be running fine now, thanks for the advice everyone!
just to say i got rid of Norton 2 years ago when they wanted to charge me to renew it. Put in MSE and it has been no problem at all , just does the job and it is free.
