Cant see why you think it is something do with the hard drive, the problems don't seem to be linked to that at all.

Have a look in the Windows Event Viewer.

Windows write lots of error messages into the Event Viewer (there are about 4 different ones - Application, System etc.)

See if there any useful messages in there.

ok will have look and see thanks...maybe update the bios and firmware may help..but cant see it been that either..it had vista on before the reinstall. like I say it installed win 7 ok and downloaded the updates fine and installed right upto where it configs them then it just goes silly and rerstarts or it also goes to a screen with stop then somat like 00000000 000 type mesage
From where have you obtained Windows 7.? Was it a free download from an Internet site or purchased from a reputable Microsoft retailer.?

Free downloads of Microsoft items can be disastrous; unless they are from Microsoft, such as MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials )

Have you tried to do a repair on the updates. Type Troubleshooting in the search box and then scroll down to fix problems with updates. Click on this and follow the prompts to start the repair and let it do its stuff. This could fix your issue.

ok thanks will try that
Have you tried a "Clean Boot" see

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

for details how to do this.

I had this problem and once I figured how to do the Clean Boot all updates installed OK. Updates after that installed without doing the Clean Boot.
