My son has been saving hard for a decent desktop computer and has a few bob stashed away. Went to PC World to benchmark some of the prices we'd seen online. PC World had not a single desktop for sale. Why not? I may as well have gone to Dorothy Perkins instead and spent my time looking at photos of models wearing not very much

always a good choice, I'm sure.

It's all mobile platforms these days. I don't know why they call themselves PC World.
Sales of desktop PCs have plummeted over the last year or so. I think desktop PC sales have fallen each quarter for the last year.

So I guess shops are more likely to stock laptops, tablets and other mobile devices.

There are loads of online sites that sell desktop PCs, such as Dell, Novatech, Amazon, eBuyer and loads more.

p.s. Note Windows 8.1 has just come out, replacing Windows 8, so maybe PC World have sold all their stock of W8 machines and waiting for W8.1 machines to come in.
Is that what men do in Dorothy Perkins! It needs to be renamed Dorothy Pervkins.

I love my desktop. Its 6 years old now but it doesn't seem in any way old-fashioned. But the main reason that I stick with it, is that I have a 32 inch screen attached. Once you have used a large screen, its difficult to go back to a small one. I also have a small 10 inch "notepad" laptop, which I use in my caravan. Its absolutely ideal for that, as space is a premium in a 'van. But I am always glad to get back to my desktop when I get home !

I am somewhat puzzled by your experience at PC World. My local one has some desktops there and always does. There plenty on line here :::

Also check out Tesco. I have bought quite a few non-food items from Tesco recently and found them to very helpful.
You could always try E-Buyer.com.
I already had a desk top and just wanted a new base unit.
Got a Zoostorm from them about 3 years and very pleased with it.
They also supply compete D/T computers to your requirements.
mine came from eBuyer, but first you have to know what you want. I only did because the computer repairman told me what to get.
its all about "surface" these days!

I too love my desktop. It has so much more scope for upgrade than a laptop and you tend to get more for your money. In the 10 years I have had it, it seems to be a bit like Trigger's broom off Only Fools & Horses in that the case and power supply are the only original bits
