Thunderbird Missing Folders

I have been using Thunderbird with great satisfaction for a couple of years. Three days ago when I started up my computer all my emails had disappeared. I have managed to reset the email accounts easily and the emails reappeared on the screen. Unfortunately all the folders I had made under each account name did not reappear. I don't know where to locate them from and restore them back on to the Thunderbird site.. I see there are some web sites which say they can find missing folders- does anyone know if they are reliable and do they actually work?

If I get the folders back is there a way to back them up easily?
Any info appreciated...
