Fractions In Word 2007

Good morning folks. No rain and a blue sky - so far!
Where do I find the fraction symbols, particularly half and quarter?
I seem to recall having read something about a 'character map' but I do not know where it is or how to get to it. TIA

Have just tried Word 2010 and if I type in 1/4 (those three characters) it automatically gets changed to the fraction ¼ when I type the space afterwards (same for ½).
There are fractions among the large selection of composite characters offered by the "Insert / Symbol" menu.
running charmap may be helpful
To find character map:
1. click Start button (bottom left of screen);
2. enter Charmap or Character Map into Start Search box;
3. name Charmap appears;
4. click on Charmap and you see a selection of character maps.
