downloaded a dodgy avg anti virus on my computor last year.had to get it mended. how to i cancel my subscription when i get an e mail to renew new contract. thank you for any help

Was it a paid for version? Have you set up a payment - direct debit or continuous Credit Card Authority?
If not then just don't renew it.
If it's dodgy can't you just uninstall the program?

Are you sure the AVG was dodgy? If there was a virus from AVG I'm sure AVG would sort it out as they are a reputable provider. Did you already have some antivirus software on your computer as having two products can cause conflicts and slow the computer down.
You should be able to click on it and select an uninstall option. Or you can uninstall easily via the Control Panel

What makes you think the AVG program is dodgy? It is a well known and respected product. What messages if any are you getting to give you this impression?

When you get the email, can't you just tell them you don't want it any more, and cancel?

If you've recently updated Adobe Reader and/or Flash Player you may have omitted to spot the (annoyingly) pre-ticked option to install a free McAfee scanner product, which then gets installed as part of the update routine.

If this is the case then the AVG and McAfee software will be conflicting with each other. The computer may begin to behave in a way which you associate with a virus infection (I leave that to you to judge).

Use Windows Add/Remove programs to see if there are any programs listed which you have no recollection of installing.

Make sure your computer is completely disconnected from the internet when the uninstall step leaves it with zero virus protection. A couple of minutes exposure is all it takes.

If you haven't visited the Windows Security Essentials page yet, you will have not seen the part about Windows XP support being withdrawn on 8th April 2014.
