My mum (who is a bit of a technophobe) likes the idea of having a tablet. I was thinking about the Tesco Hudl but the screen is 7" which is too small. She isn`t going to be doing anything complicated with it so it doesn`t need to be state of the art so for that reason, I don`t want to be spending hundreds of pounds. I will probably Google but has anyone got any personal experience of buying a cheap(ish) tablet for an elderly person please?
237SJ---You will only get confused with all these answers. The best solution is the one you came up with yourself. Get yourown tablet first and then when you are used to it let your mum try it. So sorry about your mum's illness . My sister (69years ) has ovarian cancer. She is using a tablet now and getting tremendous pleasure from it-- ebaying , playing games,...
But my suspicion would be that one gets the quality one pays for, in terms of build or pixels or whatever. You may wish to reconsider the budget ? Check your local supermarkets for ideas re price.
If your Mum is a Technophobe, I can't see her taking easily to a Tablet. I am elderly and us old folk need big screens and nothing which might be loaded with Windows 8 or 8.1
Get her a small laptop with Windows 7. I reckon that she would cope better with such an item.
Thanks OG. I don`t mind spending about £200 and I don`t think pixels etc will be a problem because she will just be using it for playing games, reading e books and maybe surfing the net.
If it's a tablet you want then I can recommend the Bush 8 inch (£99.99 from Argos) Just bought one for my husband . Personally I prefer my laptop to a tablet anytime.
I bought an @tab 7" tablet from Sainsbury's a short while ago (largely because it was a ridiculously cheap 'end of line' offer and I couldn't resist it). I'm absolutely delighted with it because it's so easy to use.
Why don't you borrow one first and let her try it . The 'swiping ' can be a bit of a problem for older people. They sometimes find it too quick on some tablets.
andres - I`m not too sure where I can borrow one from. Funnily enough, I don`t have a tablet and I want to get one for myself in the next couple of days so I thought I might let my Mum have a go on it so that she can get the gist.
decmangen - there is a Samsung Tab 3 at my local Currys (149 pixel, 8 hrs battery life, 16GB) which retails for £279 but it is half price. I think it is a demo one and it is white but that might just do for my Mum.
Methyl "You seem to have the product outline and screen size in mind without a clue as to why you might want to purchase the product. Perhaps the advertisers dream consumer" Not quite. My mum has breast cancer that has spread into her bones and I just want to give her something that can amuse her and connect her to the outside world when I am away working and so that she can feel (by being given a nice birthday present) that she still has some life left in her to enjoy. So I do have a clue why I might want to purchase the product.
