Explain Functions Of A Tablet

I am a bit of a computer illiterate and i would like to know what exactly a TABLET does. Do they do the basic functions of a small computer and would one be of help to someone who wishes to start. Are they just a small computer without a key pad and use touch screen instead. Thanks. Any further info would be appreciated.

They won't replace a proper computer. I mainly use mine for surfing the net, playing games, watching films and listening to music, I prefer it to pc as it doesn't need to be booted up, it's constantly reading to go as long as it's charged up.

I wouldn't be without it and probably only switch my main computer on once a month.

I suspect anything without a proper keyboard is an aquired taste.
I'm looking and failing to find one that appeals at the moment. Either the spec is lacking, of the build quality is not ideal, or the price more than I can justify.
