Speed Up My Pc Program.

Yesterday, I had a pop up window which had a chrome symbol on it and it said I needed to update the video thingy. I installed it and got loads of other things as well, 'Driver update', 'Back up My PC' and 'Speed up my PC'. I got a bit worried and stopped the installation. I then did a malware scan and it found 107 items, most of which seemed to be PUP things.

I have been into 'My Computer' settings and uninstalled the driver and back up programs but it won't uninstall all the 'Speed up my PC' prog. It said I could do it manually. This big blue square with a clock thing is now in the bottom tray and I don't know how to get rid of it, manually

Will it be ok just to leave it? It does tend to dominate the screen when I switch on.

I'm assuming you're using Chrome - thats why it had a Chrome icon.

Download the free version of Malwarebytes

Scan the computer, and then before you restart it after its cleaned everything, turn off System Restore. Some nasties reload themselves from System Restore.

After you've restarted the computer, do another scan.

Only when the scan is clean after a restart turn back on System Restore.

Navigate to the Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools program group.

Click on the System Restore program icon.

Click Next > on the Restore system files and settings window.

Choose the restore point that you want to use.

Never click on any pop up unless you are very sure it is authentic!! An authentic looking symbol is very easy to copy and paste. Dont trust them!!

Thats correct, but its not what Tilly2 wants.

Click Windows button, then right click on 'Computer' then select Properties. In the next window select 'System Protection'. Highlight the Disk and choose 'Configure'. From the next window put a tick in 'Turn off system protection' then click Apply and OK.

I am doing a full scan at the moment and will have a go at sysyem restore once it has finished. Thanks for your help.

How are Ratter's instructions different from yours, SA?

Turn on System Restore after you've re-booted and your happy that everything has been removed.

My instructions were to 'switch off' System Restore.

Ratter15 instructions were to 'use' System Restore to go back earlier. Which might or might not have worked. After using Malwarebytes to remove the nasties, system restore might have put them all back again.

I have just done another malware scan and it still picking up infections. I did a full scan this morning a thought they had all gone. It has found another 4.

Yes,
select/highlight/choose 'Acer (C) (System) ON' then Configure.

In the next window change the selection and choose 'Turn off system protection' then click apply and ok.

If the scan keeps turning them up then you need to consider doing the scan with your pc in 'safe mode'

Er, yes! Shut down (not restart) leave 30 seconds and start up again. Then do another scan with Malwarebytes. Do not re-enable system restore until your happy and scan clean.

To get 'safe mode' shut down pc. Press power button to boot up, but at the same time starting tapping rapidly F8 button. You should get an option to start in 'safe mode'. Select it.
Safe mode gives you the absolute minimum in drivers loaded, just enough to start Windows and looks a bit weird. If you do not get an option to boot into safe mode, then you were too slow when starting tapping F8.

To exit 'safe mode' just re-start pc as normal.

Thanks for explaining safe mode, SA. I have done everything you have told me to do but the Speed up My PC Prog is still there.

Anymore ideas as to how I get rid of it?
