When I had XP I had a useful asset on my desktop, a Google search. I just typed in the name of a file or even a subject, and it came up with possibilities either on the computer or on the web. Since I have had to switched to Windows7 this has gone. There seems to be a search box bottom left but is nothing like as good, any ideas please?

You can still get a Google toolbar for your browser. Not come across a separate app as I can recall.
Possibly Google Desktop, K.............

This has been overtaken by the "Copernic" version now. I know it enables searches on your PC files, but not sure if it includes Web searching as well though.
Personally,I avoid, if possible, anything which involves Google. It is the intrusiveness that I dislike......collecting data from my computer; leading me to sites from which they benefit and I feel sure avoiding directing me to sites which are more appropriate for my needs.

No longer do I have Google Chrome as a Browser or Google as a Search Engine. I really appreciate Firefox as a Browser and Bing as a Search Engine. In addition, along with that awful Internet Explorer, I have 'Sea Monkey' & 'Safari' as Browsers which are linked to a few Search Engines such as 'Duck Duck Go' and the excellent but unfortunately named 'Dogpile'.

Builder; If I download it, what exactly happens, is it a desktop icon I can click on to access when required, or does it replace something existing please.
It's really just a gadget/mini-app that sits on your desktop. You call it up whenever you need it.

It scours your PC and indexes all your files. As they change, or are updated, it re-indexes them accordingly.

As Hans has mentioned, it does effectively give Google access to your files, but then, ordinary Google searching could do that anyway if it wanted to.
