I thought I would take advantage of the free upgrade.
Followed the links, and it ended up asking for my credit card details.
It said FREE. Tut!

It is a free upgrade from the app store.

Yes, I saw it said free, but then it asked for my card details.
I've loaded it today ferlew and it was free.
Have you registered an account with Apple? If not then they must have wanted you to join.
Just found this and you do need to have an account...Get an Apple ID: If you own any hunk of Apple hardware made in the last decade it’s hard to imagine that you don’t also have an Apple ID. But if you’re That Person, it’s time to get one. And it is because you can’t download Yosemite from the Mac App Store without such an ID. Again, Yosemite is free so you won’t see a mysterious charge appear on your credit card after the download, but you still need the ID to get a copy.
It is free once you have added a credit card to your itunes/app store account, you can remove it again.
I helped an elderly relative open an Apple account and there was an option to avoid registering a credit/debit card. She now redeems iTunes Gift Cards to pay for any games, ibooks or music.

Ahhhhh, I was scared to add a card.

Giz a clue please Jomlett :)
Go to the iTunes store and click on Account to join or Redeem to cash in prezzies from relatives!
Yep that makes sense. I remember reluctantly adding a credit card some years ago. Never had any money taken though. It'll be OK ferlew.
same for amazon store..you need to register details but no charge is deducted when you download free apps..

Ok, thanks all, I will bite the bullet tomorrow, tad late now. (Plus I've had a double V&T) shhhhh
NEVER shop on line after a few..you may wonder why there is a speedboat and ferrari parked on your drive in a few weeks time !! lol...
Sober is best with a credit card in your hand:-))
You can set up an Apple account without a credit card. Here's how:

If you don't have a compelling reason to install Yosemite I'd wait a few months before upgrading: give Apple a chance to iron out/correct the inevitable glitches etc. that occur when any new OS is release (even though Yosemite has been 'thoroughly tested' via public beta for a while).
Question Author
Oh heck Snags, I have just seen your post ^^bit late now, and I see it's the very devil to uninstall. :(
