Your keyboard is set to American English. You need to reset it to UK English. One of the techies will tell you how.
"Start" ....... "control panel" .............. "region and language"

Check that you're English keyboard is selected.

Thanks for the replies....but, I am set to English [UK]

Any more ideas...please.

The driver may have been corrupted and it's reverted to US. Simplest thing is to switch off completely and try again.

Thank you the Builder. I will do that now. X
Are you actually using a UK keyboard (with the £ sign above 3 and the @ sign over ')? Some shops sell 'international' keyboards with different layouts.

Assuming that you are, check that your computer knows it. 'English (UK)' refers to the 'input language' expected by Windows but you can still have different keyboards associated with it. Go to Start > Control Panel and click 'Change keyboards or other input methods'. Then click 'Change Keyboards'. Look under 'Installed services' to check that 'United Kingdom' is shown twice (i.e. for both the input language AND the keyboard type).
Inverted comma key comes up as @. Have you got your Caps Lock on ?
