An icon has appeared on the lower right taskbar of my laptop.

When I hover over it, it says 'Get Widows 10'

Should I follow the link?

Oops, typo. Windows not Widows.
up to you....but it is only an invitation to register for windows10 which you can cancel anytime before it downloads at the end of july

Thank you, the Alices.
Don't be all fired and ready to get it immediately when it finally gets offered around about 29th July.

Make sure all your peripherals and programs have produced updated drivers/versions for Windows 10.

I'm going to delay upgrading for about 3 months and then only on one machine first.
I agree with SlackAlice.

I never up-dated to Windows 8/8.1 and am glad that I never did.

There's an old saying..."If it aint broke, don't fix it".

I updated from W8 to W8.1, and I'm glad that I did.

I might stick while I'm ahead though and swerve this one.
If you are considering upgrading to Windows 10 last month an update came down which readied your computer to install Windows 10 .If you are using 64 bit windows the update is KB 3035583 and if you are using windows 32 bit it is KB 2952664 . Check your updates and see if either of these are loaded if not download them from the Microsoft website

How would I know if my computer is 32 or 64 bits?
It depends on what edition you have of Windows. The following link should explain how to find out whether you have 32 or 64 bits. :-
