With most Android devices you simply press where you want the text to go (e.g. the address bar of a web browser) and an on-screen keyboard appears, which you type on in basically the same way as any other keyboard.

Not trying to text. All I get is the normal phone keyboard but no obvious way of switching between number and letter.
I'm confused. If you're only trying to enter a phone number, why do you need to enter letters? (The UK phone system doesn't recognise 'phonewords', such as 1-800-FLOWERS, in the way that the US system does. You have to enter numbers only).

Not trying to call or send text. What I am trying to do is frowned upon on this site.

Now I'm REALLY curious!

Go on, give us a clue!
( . . . and then I might be able to provide you with a sensible answer!)
PS: If you're trying to root your tablet (which is often recommended here, rather than being frowned upon), please tell us which method you're attempting to use.

Trying to unblock phone network. The tablet was left with my wife by a drug rep. It was pretty easy to restore factory settings using YouTube but rather more difficult finding any info on unblocking network.
Unlock you mean ? Can't a mobile shop do that for you ?
Are you saying it was a gift or they forgot their tablet ?
