I am trying to transfer files from my C drive which is getting full (20GB free out of 500) to my F drive which has tons of space but it is taking AGES.
eg. I have just tried to shift a file full of raw picture files (only 14 gb) from my desktop to the second HDD and it just sat there saying "two hours" is this normal? ...the words "what" and "Funicular" come to mind!
You've not told us what drive F actually is but I'd guess at a USB flash drive. While such drives can sometimes offer reasonably decent 'read' speeds, their 'write' speeds are notoriously slow. What you're seeing isn't at all unusual.
Oh, hang on. I've just re-read your post and seen 'second HDD'. I apologise if my post above is irrelevant.
A possibility though is that there's a background program on your computer that's constantly reading and writing data to one of your hard drives, causing it to 'bottleneck'. Try making transfers in Safe Mode to see if you get any improvement.
