I have an Epson xp 315, now nearly 2 years old. It clogs up and needs head cleaning so frequently that it must be using a fortune in ink. It produces print with white lines about every 1 inch making it difficult to read. Is there any way I can "scrub" the heads without running the head cleaning program?

I always use genuine ink in any of my printers.
I have read about and experienced (on a friends printer) where compatible ink was used and then a different brand of compatible ink used and that led to the printer clogging up - as there is always residual ink left in the print heads when you change cartridge.

Thanks Hans for the link, I have looked up ink problems in my user guide but it only suggests using the head cleaning utility supplied in the software. It does not say if I can dip a toothbrush in meths(?) or whatever and wipe the rollers??? even if that is physically possible. The ink however needs replacing very frequently and genuine cartridges cost an arm and a leg.
I have found another link which talks about 'Banding' and checking if the print head nozzles need attention.. Might be worth exploring the pages.:-

Well RATTER15 that was some link. I have had a quick scan of quite a few of the methods and have kept a note of the link. I will give one of them a go, not sure which one. I will have to get up in the right mood because I have not got a lot of confidence in my mechanical abilities. Many thanks for all the answers I have received.
