I would have thought 4Gb was plenty for everyday work, or are you doing something compute intensive?
Is your hard disk full up or nearly full up?
The reason I ask about your hard disk being full up is that if Windows finds it is running short of RAM memory it copies parts of RAM memory out to hard disk (then copies it back in later) - it is called "swapping".
So if your hard disk is full up then Windows has nowhere to copy out RAM memory for swapping.
Make sure your hard disk has plenty of room, Windows always need hard disk memory for temporary files and so on.
MOVE (not copy) personal files you no longer need out to an external hard drive or memory stick (or delete them). Video files tend to be the largest.
Make sure your hard disk has lots of spare space, particularly if you have a laptop with a small SSD drive (some only come with 32Gb or 64Gb of SSD).
