I must be particularly slow today but will someone explain the questions/answers to 1ac...17ac/27ac...15dn. I just dont understand how the numbers relate to words.

Just got it - a lot depends on how the calculator sets out the numbers (letters).    1Across becomes HILLBILLIES, 17A and 27A become SHELL OIL and 15D becomes ILLEGIBLE.
