Saw that news on the BBC site. There's still no explanation of the dog's death though.  Strange situation.

The dog was in a crate with no food or water, I read somewhere

From the article:

//The cause of the couple's dog's death has not been confirmed but it is now known that Arakawa had picked the animal up from the vet, where it had undergone a procedure, on 9 February.

The procedure "may explain why [the dog] was in a crate at the residence" while two surviving dogs were found roaming the property, Mr Mendoza said.//

In today's Mail

It says the dog was in a kennel in the bathroom closet, next paragraph says the dog was caged. Either way he was trapped

This is a dreadful story.  So very sad.

Yes, awful ...

Some of his great "friends" have expressed much sadness. Pity they weren't friends enough to keep in regular touch. 🙄

I read that that they were very private and didn't like people around.

Well so am I - but I have one or two friends/family who would raise an alarm if they went a couple of days without hearing from me (I hope!).

I thought the same, dave.  I can't imagine how they managed without help in the home and garden at least.

I understand they had help, outside anyway, maybe both, but they rarely met when they arrived to work.

Yeah, the BBC article, spotted no mention of a crate.  That would explain things.

The virus is caused by rodent droppings. Wasn't it a pest control worker who raised the alarm? Perhaps the Hackmans waited a tad too long in calling him in.

I just read in the DM that while no sign of rodents was found in the house, there was in the outbuildings. Just a really dreadful situation. That he also suffered from advanced Alzheimers makes it all even more sad.

So many nasty viruses come from rats and bats. It's heartbreaking to think that he might have been living alongside his wife's corpse for up to a week but not really being aware due to his lack of cognition. Poor souls.

One of my elderly neighbours repels visitors. He won't answer the door and no neighbours have his phone number.

He is a creature of habit though. He closes his upstairs curtains as soon as it's dark and opens them at 7am every day.

I would be banging on his door if his curtains were still closed at 10am. I'd rather be sworn out by an angry man than leave someone potentially in trouble

I read this earlier today.  Wished I hadn't.  So upsetting.

The whole thing is very sad. Gene Hackman was one of my favourite actors.
