Have checked and no viruses. When I say slow I mean very slow and cant get moved on to what I want next till it decides to.I have windowsxp. This has gone on for 2 weeks now.Would appreciate any ideas what could be wrong.Thanks.

Is your anti-virus running in the background, or something like that?

When it's going slow, if you can, do ctrl+alt+del and click the processes tab. there, click the "cpu" column title twice, so that the ones with the highest numbers are at the top. and then note down the "image name" of the ones with CPU numbers that are high.

it doesnt have to be a virus, it could be easily be spyware or adware, make sure you have at least 2 spyware softwares and 2 adware software. you can get good free ones from www.majorgeeks.com

or if its just on the internet when you get this slowness it could easily be that so many people are on the same broadband providers server at the same time.

Thanks for that I dont know what I am doing but I have followed your instructions and come up with this there is a whole list and these are the high ones but numbers keep changing--------ypagerexe cpu99 33,368k ieexplore cpu 00 30,780k and another further down is sychost system 27,000k another tasking.exe 5,320k no doubt you will understand this as i cant thanks for you reply and await to see if there is anything there you can help with

it also happens when your computer does automatic downloads. check to see if anythign tis being updated when it happens
ok, that ypagerexe is either a trojan or something to do with yahoo messenger.

as bennyboy says, have you done a spyware check too?

when it's doing this again, try right-clicking that ypagerexe, and clicking "end process". does your computer work fast again?

get adaware from lavasoft.com... it's free... scan your system, and clean it out...

should help...

another really good site is http://www.answersthatwork.com/

go to 'task list' and search on the different processes that are running on your pc, like sychost (as you mentioned above...

for example:

Yahoo! Messenger. YPAGER shows up in the Task List when you either have Yahoo! Messenger open, or you have it running in the System Tray. It will show up as YMSGR_TRAY in Windows 9x/ME and YPAGER in Windows NT4/2000/XP/2003.

Recommendation :
Essential if you use Yahoo! Messenger since this task is... Yahoo Messenger ! If you do not use Yahoo! Messenger but find that YPAGER is running every time you start your PC, then de-install it via the "Add/Remove Programs" icon in the Control Panel.
