missing monitor colours

My desktop is fine but pop up boxes are not right. Following advice from several people i went to START, CONTROL PANEL, DISPLAY, APPEARANCE, ADVANCED.
When i click on desktop colour option button, for instance, there are 20 colour boxes showing but i can only see colours in 12 of them, the other 8 are showing as black or something near to black. help please on how to get my monitor back to factory default or at least showing the missing colours. I don't understand colour management etc so anything like that an idiots guide would be great
