renewing IP Address

Why should I have to renew my IP address - every time that I connect my PC to the internet - via my Netgear DG834 router ?

You shouldn't have to.

Have you set the Netgear to act as a DHCP server and given it a range of IP addresses ?

Probably because Netgears are one of the worst routers around. I suggest moving to another make of router, a more reliable one like ZyXel.

It's a well known fact within the computer industry Steve. Just browse around the web most people are unhappy with Netgears.

I personally can't fault my Netgear kit.

What I do find unacceptable is their total lack of Technical Support - it's non-existent.

Did you resolve your problem ?

No - I haven't resolved the problem - everytime that I reboot the PC - I get an ip error which necessitates my having to renew the IP address

Can you describe your setup a little more ?

ISP - I.e. cable or ADSL ?
Just one PC connected wirelessly ?
Is the Netgear set up to act as a DHCP server ?

My set up is my main PC connected via cable - ADSL
The rest of my network is connected wirelessly - up to two laptops and a PDA - none of the wireless connected have any problems with IP addresses

I would start by checking the settings on the Ethernet card / TCP/IP settings.

Should be set to obtain IP address automatically, obtain DNS address automatically with DHCP enabled.

Have you got the latest drivers for the Ethernet card ?

Have you any IP filtering set apart from a firewall. What does an ipconfig /all show before and after you renew the IP address ?

By renewing your IP address everytime, you can access the site very fastly, can't be banned from any site, mainly used for playing games through online etc.. Only Dynamic IP can make renew of your IP address. Follow the methods to renew it:-
1)Go to Start->Run->Cmd->Press Enter.
Type in "ipconfig/release" for Current IP address and then type "ipconfig/renew" for New IP address.
2)Simply reset or unplug your modem/router.
If you have Static IP, just make a request for renewing your IP address to Internet service Provider.
