my avid xpress pro HD wont play clips in the timeline, can anyone help

i put some clips in the timeline part and press play and nothing happends. the only thing that does happen is that the audio bar just above the timeline flickers with the audio level at the particular frame i started playing at. there is only one clip that does play but only from the bin, this clip has no audio. can anyone help, if you can i'll be so happy. thanks loads. kaz
