Whenever I plug any of these into any USB port, the first one in is always labeled drive "K" and then "L" etc.

Is there any way to asign a drive letter to a temporary drive or stick so that it's always the same letter whenever it's plugged in?

Trouble is my auto-backup program will try to back up my docs to anything labelled "K" and obviously that creates problems if for example I plug my external drive in that's full of films my back-up tries to put "my documents" onto the same drive!

As an alternative are you able to name your external hard drive / memory stick. I've done this for a memory stick. Can you then tell your backup program to ignore say K:\fredsfilms ? (if you can tell your backup program what to backup it could be possible to exclude something?)

Only a thought but probably no use :(

Thanks for that Machecoul, yes I can rename the drives easily but the letter isn't affected other than by the order it is connected to the PC. Auto prog is Good Sync Pro and yes you can specify where to back up to but only letters not drive names, well not that I've found anyway.

Why does the system sometimes assign a different drive letter to my USB devices? How do I set up Good Sync to synchronize with a specific device?

Insert the USB drive. Go to Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management. Select Disk Management. Click the right mouse button on the drive. Select "Change the Drive Letter and Paths..." for the drive and then assign the letter you want to the drive. the drive letter you specified.

Is this any help?

I found it in FAQs of the Good Sync Pro website so there might be other info there if it doesn't help.
