info on my pc says dimm o has 512mb of memory and dimm1 is empty.
can i put a further 512 mb into dimm1to upgrade to 1gb

Yes you should be able to.

Go here:
http://www.crucial.com/uk

and scan your system to see what sort of RAM to buy (and how much you can, etc.), as it may be limited by your motherboard.
