Driving your computer

An anorak of a question here. How do you scroll the pages up/down ?
I use the arrow up/down keys, Mr.P moves the pointy thing to the right hand bar, presses and holds down the left hand side of the pad ( its a laptop ) then with another finger strokes the little control pad in whichever direction he wants the page to move.
I say his ways unneccesarily complicated and time-consuming when he could just use one finger and one movement but he won't try my way.
How do you do it ???
