Why does a downloaded movie (690Mb) take up 4Gb on the destination DVD-R? Is there a way I can compress these files so as to fit more on 1 disc? I use Nero to do my burning. TIA

it depends how you are putting the movie onto dvd
if you are just putting on the dvd as a file so your pc can read it then it will only take up as must room as the original ie 690mb
however if you convert it to to a dvd film, so for example you can watch it on a dvd player then no the size is the size because its been converted to a dvd film rather as just a file stored on a dvd disc
