No sound from computer

Got this error message -

'RTHDCPL . EXE - Illegal System DLL Relocation'

Have managed to get rid of this error by downloading patches from microsoft but now can't get any sound from my computer.

Any ideas on how to fix this please? - Have checked settings and leads etc but can't find any obvious problem.
