When logging on I get a message telling me the fast user switch is disabled. Why would I want to turn it on? as it's function surely, is to enable you to switch users without logging off and I'm the only one using this computer

You just about answered your own question.

The only reason for switching it on in your case would be to stop windows telling you it's switched off!

Cheers AC.
I should have said that everything has slowed down dramatically lately and wondered if this was the reason I was getting this message. Then again if that is the reason, what good would it do? Does'nt make sense.
It's slightly odd .... the option is on by default so you ....(or something) has turned it off
(it's not the sort of thing I'd expect a virus would do though).

I suspect you just need a good clear out ;-)

clean out your temp folder
(to make it easier copy the following to a notepad file and save as "clean.bat"

rd /s /q %temp%\
del /q %temp%\*.*
pause

and run
(use about once a week)

empty your IE temp folder
tools | internet options | delete temp files

XP likes about 25% free space on the system disc ....
check your free space
use disc clean up
defrag your disc(s?)
check for errors
select disc ... right click ... properties | tools

and of course scan for virus / adware / malware

I rebuild my machine every year or so to keep down the clutter ... so as a last resort
