Problem with wireless

I have an HP Pavilion notebook, just over a year old, which I am currently trying to sell.

Whilst I used it, I did not use the wireless facility and only ever used a USB modem.

Now the LED on the on/off wireless button does not light up, when pressed, and there is no icon appearing in the bottom right hand corner of the screen (showing wireless networks detected).

Does anyone know how to rectify this?
