video to mp4 player

I am new to the world of MP4 players( technology in general ) so , can anyone tell me how I upload video on to it ? Will I need special software and if so where do I get it ? Thanks in advance for any much needed answers .

My creative came with software that automatically scanned my hard drives and downloaded the mp3s and mp4s.

It converted where necessary. I expect yours has something similar.
