Will my UK laptop work in Canada

Does anyone know if software or games cds/dvd disc in Canada will work on my UK laptop? I move over there next week. I also have many of my uk dvds and disc so dont want to change region as then it wont play my uk stuff.
If I can make it region free might be best solution but I dont want to mess my alptop or drive up by fidling with the setting.

Canada is Region 1, Europe is Region 2.

The easy answer is to buy an external region 2 dvd drive in Canada. Then you can play your UK stuff on the internal drive, and the Canadian stuff on the external drive.

would it be ok to buy here and then in explorer just right click on drive and change it to region 1. So this way I have it before I go.

Yes, I see no reason why you can't do that.
