Firefox on Mac - Popup Thingy - Make It Stop

I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.3 on my Mac. At least once a day, Firefox browser keeps closing and I get a message which reads: The page at pcturbopro.com says: NOTICE: Your system is not optimized and your computer performance is not at the highest level. Would you like to install pcturbopro? How can I stop this happening? It's very annoying. I don't have a PC and I've never visited this site. Can anyone advise please. TIA.

You have downloaded a parasite virus. I can only find instructions to remove it on a pc - I know nothing about Macs.

It certainly isn't Firefox that's the problem.

Oh dear. . . a virus. How very dare it.

I have my Firewall and Anti Virus software turned on.

I will have to investigate this further.

It is an annoyance rather than a nasty. They want you to buy their useless software.

I don't know if Adblock (a firefox addon) works in Mac. It may stop your problem.

I know nothing about Macs either, but I ran a test on PCTurbo the other week and found it was easy to uninstall, though it brought others with it, including two trojans and Winfixer.
But then, Id switched off my firewall and av to do so, and installed everything the website wanted to.
So its best to remove it and have a good look around your system for leftovers.

This thing is for Windows -- you're just getting a popup. You don't have a virus or anything like that (most likely), so don't worry.

Quit Firefox, restart, and try browsing with Safari just on answerbank. Still get these popups?

Ethel: I've now downloaded the Adblock add-on. I will see how I get on with this feature.

Mac70: Firewall & AV say everything is fine. Checked my system and folders for pcturbo references but nothing showed up that looked out of place.

fo3nix: It does seem to be a popup window like you said.
I didn't think it would be a virus. I've been using Macs at home since 1990 and I've never had problems with viruses.
With my Firewall and AV turned on and the structure of the Mac OS X (very stable) I should be fine, touch wood.

From memory, the popup appears at random and not on any particular website. I never stray from my regular bookmarks although, I was looking for song lyrics last week.

To close, I'll clear all my cookies and reinstall Firefox and use Safari on sites that I think work better than Firefox.
Both browsers are really good.

If you do get problems again, check the activity monitor and see if there's any apps running that seems suspicious.

I agree with you though, I'm 99% sure you have nothing to worry about.

It always seems to happen when I'm on a website called reddit.com

So now I know not to visit this web site.
Shame really because it can be quite amusing.

No keep visiting it. I use it daily, and never suffer from what you say. It's a safe site (though the sites it links to, that you may click on, may not be).

I trust all your answers on this site as I know you are a Mac man (or woman) and you are a good person to have answer all the Mac questions. You're on my top 5 list for answers.
