Vertical band on laptop screen?

My laptop developed a pink vertical band from top to bottom, approx 2 inches thick, and it flashes intermittently. It originally was on the left of the screen, but is now on the right.
Touching the affected part of the screen seems to disperse it, but it returns after a few seconds.
Any ideas as to how I might remedy this?
Cheers
