shutting down

when a friend shuts down his computer everything goes through the motions,power seems to shut off, screen goes blank but when he moves mouse or touches a key the computer fires up again as though he has just switched it on. i have had a look at a few settings but cannot really find anything wrong ..any suggestions?

I assume he is chosing the 'shutdown' option and not just 'standby'?

yes thats correct
Is he on Vista? The Vista boxes I have seen go into a standby-like mode when "shut down" unless you specifically choose a complete shutdown, which MS don't recommend unless the machine will be inactive for a few days.

no xp--- computer shuts down but touching mouse/key will reboot from start not like hibernation
I had the same problem, despite trying every setting I could find on XP to tell the thing to turn the PC off. In the end I gave up and resorted to turning the power off at the socket when "shutdown" had completed.

I think it must be an XP thing though, because when when I run Ubuntu (its a dual installation) and choose shutdown the PC is switched off.
