Unable to click on shotcuts

I used to be able to double left-click on an icon and it would open the folder etc. For some reason I'm no longer able to do this and if I want to open something on the desk top or in, say, My Documents I have to right click on the icon and select "open" at the top of the menu in the box. How can I restore the double-click option please. I use Win XP (Home).

Problem solved. I had set the double-click speed on my laser mouse too high. All fixed!
