Norton 2006 worked fine. This year I got Norton Internet Security 2007 upgrade but it's caused nothing but problems and despite being in contact with symantec it still doesn't work properly. I got this - probably crazy - idea that if I got the non-upgrade 2008 and wiped the old stuff completely off my system that the 2008 might work fine. Could it?

Unlikely. As far as I'm aware Symantec have never produced an AV product that worked properly. Why not stop throwing good money after bad, and get one of the free (and working) products that are continually recommended on AB. If you feel that you absolutely must have a paid for product, then Eset NOD32 is the only one worth buying.
had same problem with Nortons just gave up and removed it in the end it was a bit of a nightmare to remove but worth it in the end, ended up putting AVG it seems to work ok everyone on her recommends it so I gave it a try
