Talktalk Broadband Setup

I have 2 computers both running windows ME. One is connected to Talktalk Broadband and the other, a spare, I am trying to connect. The installation gets as far as a message saying that "Dial-up Adapter is not present!. I am then instructed to go to Contol Panel and Network and click the add button to install the dial -up adapter. When I do this I do not get the Adapter icon they show with "Adapter "written alongside. Instead I get "Client", "Protocol" and "Service". These are in the box headed "Select Network Component Type" The previous box opened headed "Network" has an Adapter icon but alongside it reads "Intel (R)PRO/100+PCI Adapter. This should have the icon with just "Adapter" written adjacent.

Can any kind soul advise me, in simple terms please because I am new to computers, where I should go from here to get the machine connected. I await hearing with anticipation of solving the problem. Peter Edward

normally you install the modem ... then config a dial up connection ....

sounds like you are looking at network properties .... which should be there if all is well
no config should be needed at this level

Thanks neildownx for your reply. Unfortunately, I confused the issue by not making it clear that I am not trying to connect two computers to the same modem at the same time. One machine is therefore obviously disconnected from the modem which is then transferred to the other.. Have you any further thoughts on the problem?
I am beginning to suspect having read ACtheTROL's response that Network Properties are missing in whole or in part.

Thanks neildownx, I deleted everything relating to the installation and started again. The result is that I have got past the problem area but am now stuck on "Failure" when the computer tries to connect with the modem. This is despite the power light on it being lit and also trying an alternative USB port. The modem does, of course, work on the other computer. Needless to say I have followed the instructions to the letter.
Incidentally, you mentioned a Windows update but I am advised that Windows no longer support ME.
Have you any further thoughts? I am so close to being connected now. Regards and a Very Happy 2008. Peter Edward

Thanks neildownx. I took your advice and uninstalled everything and did the installation afresh. It took several attempts but finally it worked and the broadband is up and running.

PS. I also downloaded the Windows updates beforehand.
