I have a Canon MV830 camcorder a with which I took films over Christmas and New Year and want to transfer to my PC. I know I will have to purchase a special cable but they are quite expensive. Can anyone tell me where I can purchase one via the web please? Also, is the AV socket used for headphones? As I tried it and only got an awful noise from it.

If a socket is labelled as 'AV' it's probably either an input or output socket for 'composite video' which contains two channels of information. One is a video signal, the other is the corresponding audio. It's certainly not intended for headphones.

According to the spec on the Cannon site, this model does not have a headphone socket. As Chris says, the socket you are looking at is for both sound and video and takes a plug with an extra ring (i.e. ring1, ring2 tip and sleeve, rather than the ring, tip and sleeve of a headphone jack).

In order to transfer video to your PC you will need a firewire port on the PC and a firewire cable. You can buy a firewire card with free cable from Amazon for 7.99 which doesn't seem that expensive to me.

The camera also has a USB port, but I'm pretty certain that that is only for transferring still photos.

Hi rojash, I`ve had a look at the above and see amazon have a Belkin firewire cable for 1p. Do you think that would fit my Canon MV830?
Well, if it's a standard firewire cable, then yes - but you need to be sure that your computer has a firewire (IEEE 1394) port.
