My computer has gone silent. I've tried checking the settings and they show sound on and volume up and the volume 'wheel' under the screen (it's an hp pavilion) is turned up.
What could be the reason for this? And what's the cure?

could be a damaged soundcard? If not, try running system restore to a point where they worked (if you have XP that is)
You may also have accidentally muted it.
Check that the jack lead from your sound card to your monitor has not come unplugged

Thanks, spaced and peanut, but today's star prize goes to rojash, the only one of you to guess that you were dealing with an idiot ! The computer has just been removed from one house to another and I hadn't thought to check whether all the new connections had been made.
