Can anyone recommend any good free software for me -a novice - to organize my photos and also to touch them up - if that is the correct phrase. Thanks in anticipation

For free image manipulation software, you'll find it hard to beat Serif PhotoPlus 6:

I've never really found much need for 'album' software. (I'm happy just to store my pictures in different folders). But if you want an excellent product for organising your pictures (which will also enable you to do some basic image manipulation), try Photoshop Album Starter Edition 3.2:

If you think that you might want to share some of your photo albums with others online (as well as viewing them on your PC), JAlbum is also popular:

Other popular free programs for viewing, manipulating and organising pictures include IrfanView (which is a superb viewing program which incorporates image manipulation, compression and conversion facilities) :

It is free because it is an old version. They hope by giving it away for free you may be tempted to buy the latest version, or some of their other software.

Hi 'dunr' .........have used Picassa for ages ...it's great ....until I downloaded 'windows photo gallery live' ....I think that is even better ....try them all and see what youy like the best.

just my two cents: if you don't want anything too complicated try Irfan View. Picassa from google is great but it takes some time to learn how to use it, same with GIMP.

I would recommend Picasa, easy to download, with excellent on-line Help
Have used it for 2 years with no problems
