You can delete the files you don't need safely.
It is impossible for us to tell you what files to delete without knowing what files are on your hard disk.

I would be very wary of deleting any Windows or system files as you never know if your PC is going to need them.

By far the largest files on a computer are usually video files. If you have downloaded movies or video clips from the internet they take up loads of room.

Digital pictures and music files can take up a fair bit of room if you have lots of them.

Windows XP has a search facility on the Start menu. Select that then search for "Files and Folders" by size. Find the biggest files on your hard disk and see if it is safe to delete them of maybe back them up to CD or DVD if you want to keep them.

DONT delete any large files that you dont recognize as they may be important system files.
I typed a long answer but there was an ASP error.

Try WinDirStat

It gives you a TreeMap ( http://windirstat.info/images/windirstat.jpg ) of your hard disk or folder so you can see every file in one go, where it is, what type it is, how big it is (relativley) and what percentage it is using of its parent, all columns intelligently sort, delete/explore/copy path and more from context menu, really good software, I never free space without it, and guess what, it's free!

Also, google is your friend: http://www.google.co.uk/search?&q=freeing+spac e+on+windows
vhg is right .... every case is ifferent
but .... in general terms uninstall - not just delete progs you don't use.

clear your temp files ....
look in c:\windows for BLUE folders named something like
$NtUninstallKB921503$ (but NOT $hf_mig$)
everything in
C:\windows\help
c:\windows\prefetch
c:\windows\ie7updates

or make things easy on yourself and use cccleaner

......
ATF claner is another program that is handy,it leaves the registry files alone as messing with them can cause all sorts of PC problems.

The safest way to delete unwanted files from your PC if you are not computer savy is to use the Disk Cleanup utility.

Click on Start, then Accessories> System Tools> Disk Cleanup. This will search your hard drive for unused, old and temporary files.
