No sound from headphones

I cant get any sound out my headphones.

I have 2 plugs on the headphones and three possible sockets to plug them into

I believe that one of the plugs is for the built in mike in the headset

I have discovered that the centre socket is the line out and although I have tried every possible permutation of plug / socket I still can't get any sound

Can someone advise me what to try next please

arent the jacks colour coded then?

normally its one green and one pinky/orange
no need to use the white slot in the PC with a two jack headset

One jack is pink and the other is black

So which one goes in which socket ?

both the jacks and the slots in the PC should be colour coded so its fool-proof normally

does your PC have a manual? show you what all the ports are for?

Yes I do have a manual but 'er indoors has been doing her monthly spring clean and I only just managed to find the computer !

Tis a Dell Dimension 2400
Have managed to download illustration of rear of computer and the centre socket is clearly marked as line out

Now if I can only find my other earphones I can see if they work

Put the black jack plug in the green socket. Click "start", then "control Panel", "sounds & audio devices", under "volume" "advanced". Make sure nothing is ticked "mute". Back to "volume", check "mute" box is not ticked & it`s handy to tick "place volume control in taskbar". Hope this helps.

Tried your solution. Still no joy.

Think I'm gonna have to try another pair of earphones or perhaps check that the sound card is o.k.
