I have a Sony Vaio FS laptop and recently purchased the Netgear 834G modem/router. I was told by Sony that my laptop has a built in card so therefore I don't need an adaptor etc to connect to the router. However once I installed the router with the ethernet cable as instructed am I to assume that I always have to use the ethernet cable to connect to the internet?

No - you have to configure using the cable because you can't connect wirelessly until the router has been configured. After that (assuming that you've also configured the wireless connection on your computer) you can connect wirelessly.
