Kind of a vague question - do you mean that hitting ctrl+F doesn't bring up the search pane, or that you don't have a search toolbutton, or something else?

If it's a missing button, right-click the toolbar, make sure that "Lock the Toolbars" is not checked, then choose customize

I can get into search companion from the icon on the toolbar, but when I click on search I get a popup box with the following Message:

Unexpected Error
Action could not be completed
Search - Doesn't Work
Try this:

Open Explorer and go to the Windows\Inf folder. Locate the srchasst.inf file. Right click it and select Install. You'll need your XP CD or the files from the I386 folder. (This fix will require you to have your Win XP CD).

The Windows\Inf folder is a hidden folder. You can adjust your Explorer Folder Options (View tab) to Show hidden files and folders. You can also click Start, Run and enter %SystemRoot%\Inf to open directly to the Inf folder.
