drives have vanished

my cd/dvd rom driver has vanished i have no response from from inserting cds into drive,, opening device manager the cd driver is there with a exclamation mark over it , and trying to update driver i am told that it cannot find a better driver, i get error code 39 the driver may be corrupt or missing,i have done a virus scan thats ok,if u understand this i would appreciate any suggestions,ps would system restore correct this,i dont want to try that yet as i have enough with this problem

Well you could spend the next few days trying to solve the problem and maybe, maybe not, succeed. or you could lash out 20 quid on a new all-singing all-dancing DVD RAM drive that will read and write just about every format known to man.
